New Focus will summarize and analyze common issues encountered in practical laser cutting, providing insights into the causes and proposing solutions.

Metal cutting involves utilizing the energy released when a laser beam is directed onto a steel plate to melt and vaporize the metal. For the manufacturing industry cutting stainless steel sheets, laser cutting is an effective processing method. However, laser cutting machines often encounter problems during the cutting of stainless steel, leading to poor cutting quality. Strict control of the laser cutting machine's process parameters during processing ensures not only the quality of the workpiece but also enhances production efficiency.

Below, we will analyze through five points:

a. The impact of processing materials on laser energy absorption:

When processing materials with laser, factors such as the wavelength of the laser, material conductivity, surface roughness, and coatings can affect the material's absorption of laser energy.

b. Abnormal sparks when cutting low carbon steel:

If abnormal sparks occur, affecting the smoothness of the cut section, consider:

Promptly replacing the laser head nozzle if it is heavily worn.

Increasing the working gas pressure if using an old nozzle. See Figure 1 for the effect of different gas pressures on cutting.

c. Incomplete laser cutting:

Check if the laser head nozzle is suitable for the thickness of the processed plate.

Reduce the cutting speed if the laser cutting line speed is too fast.

d. Burr formation when cutting stainless steel and aluminum-coated layers:

Analyze the reasons for burr formation, avoiding a simple increase in cutting speed, as it may sometimes result in incomplete cutting. Consider factors such as nozzle replacement, stable guide rail movement, and so on:

Adjust the laser focus position offset based on the offset amount of laser focusing.

Verify proper operation of the laser generator. If no abnormalities are found, check the accuracy of laser control button output values.

Increase cutting line speed.

Ensure high purity of cutting gas for optimal cutting.

e. Selection of puncture points in laser cutting:

With the development of laser technology, automatic selection of puncture points is achievable through software ( ProCutter 12K with PierceTec with this function). However, for specific requirements on the roughness of the cut section, manual adjustment of puncture points in laser cutting programming may be necessary.

The above points represent New Focus' analysis of issues such as incomplete cutting, burr formation, and abnormal sparks in laser cutting, along with what we currently consider reasonable solutions. We hope this post on laser knowledge proves helpful, adding support to your future laser cutting production endeavors.
